Paterno played on the Penn State Nittany Lions football team from 1986-1990 under his father Joe Paterno. He was a reserve Quarterback during his senior year, during which he lettered.
Paterno has been on Penn State's staff for 17 seasons, 12 of which he has served as the Quarterbacks coach. Previously, Paterno served as the tight ends coach and recruiting coordinator. Prior to being on the PSU staff, he served as a graduate assistant at University of Virginia from 1990-92, Wide Receivers and Tight Ends Coach at University of Connecticut in 1993, and as the Quarterbacks Coach at James Madison University in 1994.[2] He, along with Offensive Coordinator Galen Hall, calls the offensive plays. Paterno focuses on the passing plays. While Paterno previously sat in the booth, with the leave of Mike McQueary, Paterno is now the head offensive coach on the sideline. He signals the plays in as McQueary previously did. [3]
Jay Paterno is the son of Joe Paterno. He has 4 siblings: Diana, Mary Kay, David, and Scott. Unlike his father, Jay is a Democrat, and supports Barack Obama.[4]
